FBLA Reflection

May 16, 2008 · 1 Comment

This article was easy to do because of the interviews i did with Alessia and Ms. Alvarez. They gave me all the necessary information and their opinions. There was only one thing i wish i could put in the article to make it more interesting but im not sure the school wants a bad image. You probably know what im talking about. the president got impeached and replaced by Julie Rivo because of some outrageous behavior. His misconduct (drinking) was not leaderlike so Ms. Alvarez kicked him out. I think it would make the story jucier but its the papers decision.

I enjoyed writing this piece although id rather do another A&E article because i need the experience. Im not sure if my writing has gotten better or worse, so ill let you be the judge of that. I havent been to any of my classes, including yours, in about 2 weeks because of trips and APs and im sorry this is a day late but i have a lot on my plate.  Hope you understand, see you in class! =D

FBLA Final Draft

Members of Future Business Leaders of America , overseen by Ms. Alvarez, competed in a State-competition in Orlando, Apirl 27-30, and as a whole recieved close to 40 awards. Out of the 51 students that participated in the competition 27 qualified for nationals, a new record in the state of Florida.

Ms. Austen, Ms. Mccney, Ms. Richards and a parent chaparoned Beach High’s 51 kids for three days at The Rosen Center Hotel which was packed with about 3,000 people. “It was a lot of fun to watch others compete, everyone was very supportive of each other” comments Alessia Pizorni

Trips are known for their excess of mishaps and this trip was no exception, according to Ms. Alvarez ”There was an incident that was handled but everything else ran smoothly”

“I am very impressed with my students, and especially that so many 9th graders made it to nationals” Alvarez ” it feels great to be apart of a group with members that are so enthusiastic about what they do.” shares sophmore Aleesa Stockton.

FBLA has competed every year since Ms. Alvarez has been teaching, and each time has advanced to nationals since 1979. With a record like that group effort and planning are a necessity. The club meets the 3rd wednesday of every month but if there is a project there is a small meeting with the people involved.

21 Movie Review (First Draft)

April 15, 2008 · No Comments

Exciting, heartpounding, and alluring all words that describe the well done Robert Luketic directed fim, 21, first out in theaters March 28, 2008 .

Based on Ben Mezrich’s Bringing Down the House, 21’s six main characters, MIT undergraduates and their professor, make millions counting cards in the game of blackjack at major Las Vegas casinos. The audience follows main character Ben Campell, played by Jim Sturgess, as he attempts to pay off his Harvard tuition fee by joining a secret club run by proffessor Mickey Rosa. After seeing great potential in Campell during class, proffessor Rosa invites him to join four other students in a “fullproof” scheme to count their way to the top.

As a brilliant child of a middle class single parent Campell sees this as a great opportunity to pay off his funds in a more efficient way than his $8 an hour job at an upscale clothing store. So after getting trained in speedy card counting and intricate signals the team test their abilities at Las Vegas casinos. Although not illegal, card counting is risky, especially when the casino’s watchman Cole Williams (Laurence Fishburne) is keeping a close eye.

Campells crush and member of the group Jill Taylor, played by Kate Bosworth,  the constant influx of cash, and the double life he is now able to lead ( extravagant clothes and hotels, room service, danger) are all to enticing to keep dear Ben from restraing himself. Once caught up in this frenzy he loses focus and that is when the movie starts to get your pulse racing.

This fast paced film “inspired by the true story of five students who changed the game forever” as well said on the movies cover does nothing less than keep you on the edge of your seat.
